MC Chris - Dungeon Master of Ceremonies (2008)

File:Dmoc.gif
MC Chris has always been an old favorite of mine. I actually sat next to him one time at Bye & Bye on Alberta and overheard him talking to a group of people who were ignorant of who he was. Being a fan of D&D, I was always drawn to this album along with its heavily used nerd references. MC Chris is also an on-record atheist.

The Eyes of Nye - Genetically Modified Foods (2012)

Really, the term Genetically Modified Food or Organism is a bit of a misnomer. Ever since the dawn of agriculture (even as hunter-gathers, unconsciously) we've been artificially selecting for traits that we found desirable in our food. Since the 1920s, we've taken control even further, "engineering" particular desirable traits. The term would be more scientifically accurate as "Genetically Engineered Organism". I've found that, usually, the most fervent anti-GE believers are usually the ones that don't understand the underlying science around the issue.

I usually upload the audio from videos I post—for those hungry iPods—but I feel like this one should be watched for full effect, so have at it and share with your friends.

Lebanon Hanover - Tomb For Two (2013)

http://images.cdn.bigcartel.com/bigcartel/product_images/124112622/max_h-1000+max_w-1000/mec005cover.jpg

I have to say, the first time I heard this duo I was instantly blown away. Haunting female vocals over drum machine, minimal synth backgrounds, modern coldwave at its very finest. This band captures what French coldwave was yet reinterprets it into something new and exciting. They're a German duo, married couple, and I read an interview with them saying they listen to nothing but Malaria! and Neue Deutsche Welle. Out of all of the current bands doing this sound, I dare say they are my favorite.

(UPDATE: Hotfile has been shut down, which means I've lost all of my old uploaded files. I will probably just move on to another uploader and not attempt a time consuming re-upload)

Sean Faircloth - Can Religion Justify Bullying Children? (2012)

While sitting around the Thanksgiving table, the most loathsome activity that always comes up is the ritual "Thanksgiving Prayer" always lead by the most devout believer of the clan. I bite my tongue, usually stare straight forward with eyes wide open, taking note of who takes the ritual seriously and speculate which ones are the secret atheists going along with the ride for diplomacy's sake. I'm fine with sitting silently through the ritual as long as I don't have to bow my head, clasp my hands, and/or close my eyes. Since I have the capability to separate reality from fantasy play-land, I feel most offended for the children that have no choice and a limited ability to understand the world. Not only can they not refuse to participate, their squishy, sponge-like brains are being primed for a life of unquestioning servitude. Religion forced upon children is child abuse, a reality which has no proof for existing is being hoisted upon their minds. The guilt and shame of sexuality, the inferiority of women, all of the near-universal bigotry and falsehood of religion is shamelessly taught as "the virtue of faith".

Fantastic electronic duo from Detroit. This is my favorite album of theirs so far. My favorite tracks are "Kick In the Shin" and "Blank-Eyed, Nose Bleed". They definitely have a weird punk edge to their music that is highly enticing.

Louann Brizedine - The Female Brain (2006)

One day, I was doing my usual pursuing of the Powell's technical books building. My girlfriend was selling clothes and I was disinterested in waiting in line with her. Floating around the physics books, I made my way over to the neurobiology section. Suddenly, my phone bleeped. Epinephrine flooded my body as I received the dreaded coup de grace text. I must pick a book now, or leave empty handed. There it was, with a little placard espousing its bestseller status.

Unfortunately, I found the text to be, frankly, unscientific in its wording and presentation. While the introduction was solid and laid a great opening framework for a scientific text, the actual meat and potatoes of the book felt like one long introduction, fraught with undue certainty when it came to its subject matter. I get it though, this is not a hardcore science book. Its a popular science book that is attempting to greatly simplify a vastly complex subject that is still an emerging field. The problem was in the way the simplification was achieved.

While the end of the book had a substantial number of references, individual scientific statements were made without individual citations or footnotes. This just makes me uneasy when reading a science book. How much of the statements are extrapolations of studies from the author? On what foundation is the author standing on? While I could check the back references for many statements, swaths of information did not have backing references.and statements were made that gave such certainty to their validity. While there is much we do understand about how neurotransmitters and different areas of the brain function, there is also a lot that we don't know and good science writers are adept at wording their books to reflect that.

The book forces a very dualistic viewpoint on male-female brain functions and focuses very little on the many ways that they are similar, to an absurd level. The functions of both testosterone and estrogen in the book are greatly simplified, when recent data has shown that both have more complex interactive functions in both male and female anatomy [1] [2]. Finally, at the end of the book, the author endorses acupuncture as a possible alternative to hormone therapy in postmenopausal women. As an aside, I'd also recommend foot rubs, but I wouldn't seriously suggest it in a scientific book about possible alternatives to hormone therapy.

With all its flaws, the best part of the book is the introduction. While its status as a scientific book should be questioned, the anecdotal stories of psychoanalytical tribulations by the author are, at least, entertaining and the book is written fluidly with an obviously unabashed dumbing down of its scientific content for a presumably unscientific audience. If you know anything about neurobiology, pass over this book.

Divine - The Story So Far (1984)

Having loved Divine's John Water's movies since basically forever, I leaped with emotional joy when I discovered that Divine put out a series of disco records. Apparently its somewhat hard to find LP and I'm sure it would fetch a ridiculous price at record stores. His deep raspy vocals also add a novel quality to the tracks. My favorite songs are "I'm So Beautiful" and "Love Reaction". All hail the Queen of Drag.

The Story So Far
  1. "I'm So Beautiful" - 7:51
  2. "Native Love (Step By Step)" - 3:36
  3. "You Think You're A Man" - 8:07
  4. "Shake It Up" - 3:18
  5. "Shoot Your Shot" - 6:24
  6. "Love Reaction" - 5:32
  7. "Jungle Jezebel" - 4:42
  8. "Alphabet Rap" - 5:47
